Rare Identical Quadruplets Have their first Photoshoot - As Seen on Today.com | Houston, Texas - NEWBORN & BABY PHOTOGRAPHER
“One in fifteen million,” that’s how doctors describe the chances of having identical quadruplets. The quads were conceived spontaneously, meaning no reproductive assistance was used. Just one embryo that split into four perfect babies! Today.com’s lifestyle reporter, Rachel Paula Abrahamson writes, “There are roughly 72 documented cases of spontaneous identical quadruplets in medical history.” Their unique story and my photos were featured in an article for Today.com and we couldn’t be more thrilled! You can read the article here.
The family also has two sons, a 20 month old and a newly turned 4 year old who are so excited to be big brothers and have all of their sisters home. They quadruplet girls were born on May 1st at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. The identical quadruplets were delivered via cesarean section at 29 weeks + 3 days gestation. The smallest was Petra, who weighed in at 2 pounds, 7 ounces; Hannah, the largest, was born at 2 pounds, 13 ounces. The parents are engineers and have developed a clever system to keep the girls from being mixed up. They line them up in their birth order and keep a tiny ankle bands with their names on them. Each baby is asssigned her own Paci and lays in the same position. During their photoshoot, I lined them up in their birth order and kept the same headband on the girls so years from now their parents will be able to identify who is who.
Our first photo goal was to get a family portrait. The girls were perfectly snuggled in wraps and we lined them up in dad’s arms. Thankfully he had long arms and was strong enough to hold them for an extended period of time! Mom snuggled just behind dad, while she held her 20 month old son in front of her. I tucked their sweet, four year old on the other side of dad’s shoulder. When I say that this was the perfect family to have these miracle babies, I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Dad was so relaxed and had great sense of humor. Mom was equally as calm and I particularly loved watching her love on her older two boys, careful to make sure that she spread her attention and love to her first two children. Their oldest son was such a kind child and there 20 month old was like every other toddler during a photoshoot!
After their family portraits we focused on sibling poses before moving onto individual poses of the girls. My favorite, of course, was their mugshots! They were so expressive and mugshots are always my favorite photos of a newborn photoshoot. The babies slept for most of their session. At the time of our photoshoot, they were 43 weeks gestation but 3 months old. They woke to eat, burp, and to be changed before heading back to sleep. They were the calmest babies and were SO good! It was the most memorable experience and the girls left me missing them so much in the days following their shoot. I missed them so much and they were such a joy to be around! I plan on photographing them when they begin sitting and again for their first birthday!
