MOMS - How to prepare yourself for a newborn session | Kingwood, Texas - Newborn photographer
Family portraits with newborns are somewhat of a new trend. When I began photographing newborns almost 15 years ago, moms were not as interested in being photographed after giving birth. Photographers have found ways of photographing postpartum moms in a very flattering, soft way that allows moms to feel beautiful and empowered during this time. Angles and wardrobe are everything in these portraits so when choosing a newborn photographer, find one that you love how the moms are posed for their family shots. Here are my top tips on how to prepare yourself for a newborn session:
Get your nails done or remove any chipped polish. Moms usually have their nails done before giving birth but your polish might not look up to par by the time of your newborn session. If your polish is chipped or coming off and you don’t have time to have it professionally done, remove the polish. Our cameras pick up on the tiniest of details and you don’t want something like chipped nails to ruin your priceless photos. While we are discussing hands, remember to remove your hair ties from your wrists!
Select a dress instead of a top or shirt. Dresses are more forgiving and have a more finished look than shirts so select one that you love the color and the angles will do the rest! I always suggest something light and neutral in color to create a timeless look. I provide my clients access to my client closet for all of my sessions.
Consider having your makeup professionally done. These photographs are forever and I cannot think of a more needed time than right after you have a baby to feel gorgeous! Some Hair and Makeup Artists offer home services so that’s a great way to work that in with a newborn! I personally use @katiericketts from @teamflawless.co for all of my makeup needs.
Hydrate, eat, repeat! This is so hard for moms in general but especially new mamas! A newborn session can take hours so it’s important to keep on top of hydration and meals. Plan this out so it’s not an afterthought and you’ll be set up for success!
In conclusion, taking family portraits with newborns is a wonderful way to capture the beauty and empowerment of postpartum moms. By following these tips, you can ensure that you are well-prepared for your newborn session and that you will love the final result. Remember to focus on the details, select a flattering outfit, consider professional makeup services, and prioritize your self-care. With a little preparation, you will be able to cherish these priceless memories for years to come.
