Styling your family for photos is one of the most daunting tasks but it doesn’t have to be! Let me help make all the decisions for you and present you with a few choices that you will love! This stunning mama and I worked together to style her family with this location in mind. The changing colors of fall provided a perfect backdrop to the neutrals, browns, and blues that she chose. I like to choose a signature piece for mom before we start the process of choosing coordinating outfits for the rest of the family. When mom looks and feels amazing everything else falls into place.
Once finding a dress for mom with movement, color, and a beautiful fit, we moved on to the little girls’ dresses. With mom wearing such a bold and beautiful color we chose cream dresses for her twin girls to wear with intention on accentuating more color when selecting outfits for their brother and dad.
It’s fairly easy to select an outfit for dad once we have mom and the other members of the family dressed. I like to look in to dad‘s closet to see if they have a signature piece that’s timeless and they feel good wearing. During this process, I’d like to put together a color story, so that we can visually see how all the pieces will fit together. In this particular case, we put mom‘s dress, the girls’ dresses and dad’s shirt together on the story and then I gave mom several options for her son to wear. With a A Color Story, it was very easy for her to pick out what she preferred and how she wanted to modify it. She chose the color that she liked for her son, selected the style and it came together beautifully! Mom knows her family best and when presented with just a few options, my clients can quickly make a choice without it feeling completely overwhelming.
I love to take my time with my families getting to know them, making sure we have the perfect shot and then spending the rest of our time together just focusing on the connection that they have. We always get the perfect “look at the camera and smile” and then the rest of the shoot is spent giggling laughing. I choose to focus on connection and the emotions at play versus the perfect photo!
This year I chose a location that was a bit off the beaten path, but for good reason. The landscape is absolutely beautiful and this this family was down for an adventure. They didn’t hesitate to kick off their shoes, walk in the sand and dip their toes in the water. The result was gorgeous memories of their family together memorialized through these images. This mom trusted me with her family photos which is a great honor and also a great responsibility.
