5 Tips to Prepare for Your Family Photoshoot | Houston, Texas - Family Photographer
Hello! I’m Tiffany Daniel, a family photographer based in Houston, Texas and I’d love to share my top tips to help you get ready for your upcoming family photo session. These simple suggestions will ensure your session goes smoothly and help you feel relaxed and confident throughout the experience.
Here are 5 Tips to Help Your Family Prepare for a Successful Photoshoot:
Coordinate, Don’t Match:
To achieve professional portraits that are truly stunning, your wardrobe choices should be a key focus of the session. Start by considering the purpose of the portraits, as this will help guide your clothing decisions. If the portraits are for display on your wall, aim for timeless, classic pieces that won’t feel dated with the changing seasons. Remember, you want your portraits to look beautiful year-round, so choose outfits that will stand the test of time.
Choose a color palette that complements each other (soft neutrals, pops of color).
Mix textures (denim, linen, knits) for added depth.
Avoid large logos, neon colors, or busy patterns to keep the focus on faces.
Pay Attention to the Details:
The camera captures every detail, so be sure to check everything carefully before the session. Taking the time to ensure all the details are in place will make a noticeable difference in achieving a polished, professional photograph.
Check for wrinkles and empty pockets before the shoot.
Wipe faces and noses even if you think they are clean.
Make sure shoes are clean and appropriate for the location.
Keep hair and nails neat—simple grooming makes a big difference in photos.
Prep the Kids (and Pets!):
Prepping kids can be helpful especially when entering a new environment with new people. Explaining what they will see while they are there what you are there to do will help them understand what’s to come. Don’t worry, we are highly trained in working with children and will do our very best to create beautiful portraits of your family. IF for some reason your child is feeling shy then we will focus on getting sweet candids of you nuzzling your children with laughter and cuddles. Here are some more tips to help you prepare your children:
Talk to kids about the photoshoot in advance to make it fun.
Bring their favorite toy, snack, or activity to keep them engaged.
For pets, make sure they’re well-groomed and ready to shine.
Consider having an extra person on hand to help manage pets during the session.
Get the Right Rest, Food and Hydration:
Try not to plan anything for the night before that will keep your little ones up late. Make sure that everyone is well fed before coming to the session. You can also:
Ensure everyone gets enough sleep the night before.
Drink plenty of water and fill those hungry bellies just before the session.
Keep snacks on hand in case your child needs a little distraction. Choose snacks that aren’t messy and make sure to wipe their faces afterwards.
Relax and Have Fun!
You’ve made it this far and done all the hard work! Now leave it up to your photographer to capture this beautiful moment in time for your family! As long as you’re relaxed and feeling calm, your children will be more likely to do the same. Read through these tips to help achieve, natural and beautiful portraits:
Focus on capturing natural, candid moments that reflect your family’s personality.
Don’t worry about perfection—let the genuine moments unfold.
The more relaxed you are, the more your joy and connection will shine through in the photos.
